How to Beat the Heat: Tips for Moving in the Summer

It’s officially Memorial Day weekend which mean it’s the unofficial kick-off of summer and moving season! It’s been a long time coming after this seemingly never-ending winter, am I right? We’re ready for it! Are you? Since most people move between the months of May and September, we’re giving you  some tips for moving in the summertime so you can beat the heat!

1. Planning Ahead

Since summer is the moving busy season, planning ahead can make all of the difference from a stressful experience to quick and easy one. Here are a few tips when planning ahead:

  • When to Move:

Try to pick a day to move that is not during the very beginning or the very end of each month or a holiday weekend. These can be exceptionally busy.

  • Hiring a Moving Company:

Book a moving company in advance to avoid rushing to find one last minute. Do your research to find the most trustworthy company for the best price.

  • Preparing All of Your Stuff:

Start packing all of your belongings weeks before your moving date so once it comes, you’re ready to go! Set aside important documents and items that need to remain accessible to you during the move. These should be taken with you personally when you move and not put into a moving truck to ensure you know where they are once your move is done.

Begin emptying your refrigerator and freezer weeks beforehand. You don’t want to be stuck with a fully stocked fridge on moving day!

  • Turn on Your Utilities:

Imagine walking into your brand new apartment with the AC already on. That would be amazing when you’re moving on a hot summer day! Make sure you turn on your air conditioning before you move so you can move and unpack comfortably.

2. Moving Day

It’s finally the big day! There’s so much happening…here are a few reminders to consider that will make the world of a difference:

  • Start Early:

Early in the morning will be the coolest time of the day with the most sunlight. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to unpack and get settled into your new apartment!

  • Keep Cool. Bring Portable Fans:

If you can’t get your air conditioning turned on prior to moving day or if you are unsure it will be running that day, bring some portable fans as back-up.

  • Wear Sunscreen:

Seriously! Sometimes you forget how much time you’re spending in the sun because you’re so distracted moving all of your prized possessions. You’ll thank us later for this one 🙂

  • Bring Cold Water with You:

Pack a mini cooler you can bring in your car stocked with cold water. It’s important to stay hydrated during all of the physical work of unpacking in the summer heat.

  • Be Aware of Personal Items That Won’t Hold Up in the Heat:

Be conscious of some of your items that will be sensitive to the heat. Keep these items with you and not the moving truck and get them inside a cool place as quickly as possible once you’ve arrived to your new residence.
